For forty days the giant stood in the Valley of Elah. Goliath of Gath, armored in 125 pounds of bronze, mocked Israel and defied their God. Morning and evening his voice thundered across the valley, and not one soldier stepped forward. Even King Saul stood silent.
When David arrived, not as a warrior, but as a shepherd boy delivering food to his brothers, he heard the taunts and something in him burned. It was not pride, it was righteous anger. A faith that refused to let God be dishonored.
David wanted to fight. Saul tried encasing the boy in his own royal armor, but David removed it. It was too heavy and just did not fit. Instead, David chose to rely on what he knew fit him best. A skill he had developed in fields while guarding his families sheep from wild beasts, lions, and bears. Having cultivated his courage in quiet places, he reached for a sling and five smooth stones. Then declared to Goliath and the Phillistines army, “I come to fight in the name of the Lord." The Hebrew script in this illustration translates to exactly that.
The first stone flew, it struck the giant in the center of his forehead just below where his helmet framed his face. Goliath fell face first into the dust and with the giant’s own sword, David cut off his head and the battle was finished. It was faithfulness that brought him to the battle, but it was skills he had honed over the years that brought him to victory.
Gain wisdom, develop your skill, and remain faithful. So when the Lord moves through the Earth unfolding His will, He will find something in you He can use.
