After Jericho fell, Joshua was to embark on his second largest battle while in leadership and the Israelities assumed it would be a swift victory. But defeat was not the end — it was the lesson. The Lord gave Joshua a strategy, one that required patience instead of force. Quiet, calculated positioning, ambush, a convincing false surrender, and one final instruction that must have felt small in the moment: Lift your hand toward the city of Ai.

He stood overlooking the city Ai, the word Ha’ay in Hebrew, translate to “The Ruin”. And with little understanding but complete faith, Joshua raised his hand. With his hand still in the air, flames began to rise within the city gates and endless smoke curled into the sky.

Smoke that signaled what faith had already secured. And the Lord said, “I have delivered into your hand all that was promised.”
