Ruth and Naomis stood before 3 graves. Naomi had lost her husband, and then her sons. Ruth, Naomi's daughter-in-law, had lost her husband.
Naomi knew Ruth was young enough, she could return home to Moab and the possibility of starting over, and she urged her to do so. Naomi however would be made the rest of her days to feel like a burden in her home of Israel.
Widowed, childless, empty, and staring the unknown in the face - Ruth clung to Naomi and made a vow of devotion and responsibility: “Where you go, I will go. Your people will be my people. Your God, my God.”
Atop Naomi's head is a cardinal, a symbol of grief and healing. Upon Ruth's head is a crown, a symbol of bravery and loyalty. The centaurea cyanus, galanthus nivalis, and flag iris in Ruth's hair symbolize hope.
The Hebrew script in this illustration mean hope and loyalty.
