Just trying to do all she can to get by and provide, Ruth follows behind the harvesters in a barley field, collecting whatever wheat gets left behind. Ruth is a widow, a foreigner, poor, and unfamiliar with the city of Bethlehem.
With dust in her eyes, dirt on her hands, and the Sun beating on her back, she is noticed by a man named Boaz. The day is quiet and ordinary and when approached, their meeting was no different.
When Ruth returned home that evening to her mother-in-law, Naomi, she recognized Boaz's name immediately and with excitement! He not only owned the barley field but was a wealthy kingsman of Naomi's lineage. Boaz, too goes on to learn of Ruth, who she was, her loyalty to her mother in law, and how she chose faith and responsibility over comfort.
When the nearest redeemer, of Naomi's lineage, to the widow declined the responsibility to marry Ruth, Boaz did not hesitate. He stepped forward willingly, not out of duty alone, but out of honor. Boaz described Ruth as a virtuous woman and ultimately fell in love with her for what he described as a noble heart.
The doves, wedding bells, and pomegranates are all symbols of marriage:
of a covenant, an echoing of promise, abundance, and new beginnings.
What began in survival became redemption. What began in a barley field became legacy.
